Corresponding states for mesostructure and dynamics of supercooled water.

چکیده
Water famously expands upon freezing, foreshadowed by a negative coefficient of expansion of the liquid at temperatures close to its freezing temperature. These behaviors, and many others, reflect the energetic preference for local tetrahedral arrangements of water molecules and entropic effects that oppose it. Here, we provide theoretical analysis of mesoscopic implications of this competition, both equilibrium and non-equilibrium, including mediation by interfaces. With general scaling arguments bolstered by simulation results, and with reduced units that elucidate corresponding states, we derive a phase diagram for bulk and confined water and water-like materials. For water itself, the corresponding states cover the temperature range of 150 K to 300 K and the pressure range of 1 bar to 2 kbar. In this regime, there are two reversible condensed phases - ice and liquid. Out of equilibrium, there is irreversible polyamorphism, i.e., more than one glass phase, reflecting dynamical arrest of coarsening ice. Temperature-time plots are derived to characterize time scales of the different phases and explain contrasting dynamical behaviors of different water-like systems.

ESR evidence for 2 coexisting liquid phases in deeply supercooled bulk water.
Using electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR), we measure the rotational mobility of probe molecules highly diluted in deeply supercooled bulk water and negligibly constrained by the possible ice fraction. The mobility increases above the putative glass transition temperature of water, T(g) = 136 K, and smoothly connects to the thermodynamically stable region by traversing the so called "no ...
متن کاملMetastable states as a key to the dynamics of supercooled liquids
Computer simulations of a model glass-forming system are presented, which study the correlation between the dynamics in real space and the topography of the potential energy landscape. This analysis clearly reveals that in the supercooled regime the dynamics is strongly influenced by the presence of deep valleys in the energy landscape, corresponding to long-lived metastable amorphous states. W...
متن کاملRecent results on the connection between thermodynamics and dynamics in supercooled water.
We review recent results on the connection between thermodynamics and dynamics in a model for water. We verify the Adam-Gibbs relation between entropy and dynamic properties using computer simulations, which allow direct access to the relevant properties. We combine experimental measurements of entropy with the Adam-Gibbs hypothesis to predict dynamic properties in deeply supercooled states, wh...
متن کاملShort-range ordering in the supercooled states of a dimer system
Detailed analyses have been carried out on the molecular dynamics simulations on the short-range ordering of the quenched states below melting temperature for a system of nearly spherical rigid dimer molecules under constant high pressure. We present evidence of preserving local ordering that prevents the system from having long-range translational ordering. The effect provides the cause for th...
متن کاملThe Boson peak in supercooled water
We perform extensive molecular dynamics simulations of the TIP4P/2005 model of water to investigate the origin of the Boson peak reported in experiments on supercooled water in nanoconfined pores, and in hydration water around proteins. We find that the onset of the Boson peak in supercooled bulk water coincides with the crossover to a predominantly low-density-like liquid below the Widom line ...
